How Tall Emu CRM Grew from an Internal Tool into One of Australia’s Leading Business Platforms

By working side by side with Itera Research, Tall Emu CRM grew from a single internal tool into a full CRM and ERP platform used daily by thousands of Australian businesses.

    The problem

Tall Emu CRM began with a problem many founders recognise early, when internal operations grow faster than the tools meant to support them. In 2006, the company’s founder was trying to manage time tracking, expenses, and daily workflows using disconnected systems that created more friction than clarity. Small errors accumulated, reporting demanded manual effort, and visibility across teams stayed limited.

The wider Australian market did little to ease that pressure. At the time, comprehensive CRM systems tailored to local businesses were scarce, leaving companies to stitch together tools that rarely spoke the same language. For a growing organisation, this meant operational drag became part of everyday work, rather than an exception.

Instead of adjusting processes to fit available software, the decision was made to build something that reflected how the business actually ran. The aim was not to release a market-ready product, but to regain control over internal operations and create a single place where work could be tracked with confidence.

    • Unified sales and operations workspace
Tall Emu CRM brings sales activity, inventory management, and shipping workflows into a single system. Teams no longer switch between disconnected tools or reconcile data manually, which improves visibility across departments and reduces operational friction.
    • Deep customisation at the workflow level
The platform allows businesses to add custom fields, adjust logic, and shape workflows around how their teams already operate. This flexibility lets companies adapt the system to their processes without forking the product or blocking future upgrades.
    • Extensive third-party integrations
Tall Emu CRM connects with accounting platforms, payment gateways, postal and telecommunication services, marketing tools such as Mailchimp and Facebook, e-commerce platforms including WooCommerce, and desktop tools like Outlook. These integrations are maintained to support high-volume, real-world usage.
    • Embedded telephony and communication tools
CTI integration allows teams to handle customer calls directly inside the CRM, linking conversations to records and activity history. This keeps communication and context in one place, especially for sales and support teams.
    • Cloud-based infrastructure with local data residency
Hosted on Microsoft Azure with data stored in Australia, the platform balances scalability with compliance. Each customer operates on an isolated database, supporting privacy requirements and reducing risk.
    • Security and compliance by design
Independent security audits, database isolation, and alignment with local regulations protect sensitive business data. Security decisions are built into the architecture rather than added later.
    • Continuous modernisation without disruption
Ongoing updates improve UI, performance, and integrations while preserving backward compatibility. Customers benefit from steady improvement without needing retraining or system resets.

    Outcome

Today, Tall Emu CRM supports more than 1,000 B2B customers across Australia, serving organisations that manage operations for tens of thousands of employees. The platform is recognised as one of the top fifteen CRM systems in the Australian market and received a Cloud Award in 2023–24, reflecting both adoption and reliability.

The product continues to evolve through ongoing UI and workflow improvements, guided by how customers actually use the system. Growth did not require a reset or rebuild, which remains one of the project’s defining achievements.

    The bigger picture

Tall Emu CRM’s journey shows what becomes possible when software grows alongside its users rather than racing ahead of them. Long-term collaboration, steady architectural decisions, and close attention to real workflows created a platform that remains relevant after two decades.

It has earned significant market recognition, ranking among the top 15 CRMs in the Australian market and receiving the prestigious Top Awards in 2023 – 24 – 25

For Itera Research, this project reinforced the value of patience in product development. Durable systems emerge from continuity, trust, and shared responsibility for outcomes, not from constant reinvention.
